WINDSOR — Auto and Manufacturing critic Wayne Gates, and local MPPs Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West), Percy Hatfield (Windsor-Tecumseh) and Taras Natyshak (Essex) released the following statement on the pending closure of the Nemak auto parts manufacturing plant in Windsor:
“Hundreds of workers at the Nemak auto parts manufacturing plant have been left to worry about what comes next, and how they’ll keep putting food on the table for their families. Despite a signed agreement to keep the plant open to 2022, the jobs are now at stake after Nemak Canada announced that they’re headed to Mexico. Today Nemak workers took a stand not only for themselves but for future generations. They deserve a government that will do the same.
Auto jobs are good jobs. Generations of auto and auto parts workers in Ontario built this province, and laid the foundations for a strong economy. Now, they deserve a government and a province who will stand up for them.
A storm has been brewing in Ontario’s auto and auto parts sector, and our Government has been refusing to take action. We can’t just stand at our borders and wave goodbye to good jobs — we need a plan to make Ontario an auto and auto parts manufacturing centre of excellence for generations to come.
On Labour Day, and every day, we stand with working people, and we stand up for good jobs, right here in Ontario.”
