“What we heard is that families are struggling and in crisis as a result of the transition from the youth to the adult system. Families are getting cut off from supports and are being forced to undergo a highly invasive reassessment only to be placed on wait lists in the adult system under Developmental Services Ontario (DSO),” Natyshak said. “Too many families are falling through the cracks because the Wynne government has failed to provide the help they need.”
“Families living with autism have been particularly traumatized because of bad decisions made by (this government)” said Taylor, speaking about gaps in children and youth services.
“To develop good public policy it must be done in consultation with the Ontarians who will be most affected by it. That’s really what this roundtable was all about,” said Taylor.
Local agencies provided input on the services that are currently available and also to point out where the system is failing families.
Joining the MPPs were representatives from:
Hotel Dieu Regional Children’s Centre
Autism Ontario W-E
Autism Services Inc.
Talk 2 Me/Connections Family Centre
Family Respite Services
Community Living Essex
“This was an important opportunity for Percy Hatfield, Monique Taylor and I to hear from families who require services and those who provide those services locally about what is working and where gaps remain,” says Natyshak. “We will continue to stand up for the needs of autism families who have been ignored by this government for far too long.”
