Hatfield demands commitment from Premier to assist families hit hard by flooding
Queen’s Park – During Question Period this morning, Percy Hatfield, NDP MPP for Windsor-Tecumseh, asked the Premier to commit to provincial funding to assist families whose homes were damaged during floods in Windsor, Tecumseh, and Lakeshore.
“More than an average month of rain fell in less than five hours. We had two months of rain over 15 hours. The storm water system didn’t fail – but it was overwhelmed by the amount of water in such a short period of time. Thousands of homes had flooded basements,” Hatfield said.
“Will the Premier commit to provincial funding to assist some of the home owners hardest hit with flood damage and little or no insurance?”
Last Thursday, the Mayors of Windsor and Tecumseh declared a state of Emergency due to the unexpectedly heavy rain fall that caused widespread property damage to local homes.
“Some homeowners were told by their insurance companies that there will be a $5,000 cap on their claims. This news was totally unexpected. They were never told this before,” Hatfield said.
“Unprecedented storms are causing catastrophic damages across Ontario. Will the Premier do everything in her power to help homeowners and municipal leaders in these situations?”
