COVID-19 Update - September 20, 2021

DAILY NUMBERS  

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is reporting 27 new cases of COVID-19 today, 42 cases on Sunday, and 49 cases on Saturday. In Toronto, there were 126 cases today, Peel reported 100 cases today, Hamilton reported 23 cases today, and Middlesex-London reported 18 new cases today. There are now 366 active cases of COVID-19 in our region, with 224 of those being variant of concern cases. Of the new cases between Saturday and today, 48 cases are from close contact with another confirmed case, 28 are considered community spread, 11 are outbreak related, 3 are travel related, and 28 are under investigation. There are 15 workplace outbreaks, 5 school outbreaks, 1 community outbreak, and 1 outbreak in a long-term care home. There are 15 confirmed cases in hospital, with 4 of those in the ICU.  A total of 596,267 doses of the vaccine have been administered locally, with 81.9 per cent of individuals over the age of 12 having been vaccinated with one dose, and 75.2 per cent of individuals over the age of 12 having been fully vaccinated. Across the province today there were 610 new cases. Yesterday, there were 715 cases, and on Saturday, there were 821 cases. 

VACCINES 

The Vollmer Complex and LaSalle Civic Centre have made some changes to their vaccine policy due to new provincial guidance that was issued.  Participants who are under the age of 18 who are participating in youth organized sport will not need to show proof of vaccine. Any person who is over the age of 12 and is not participating in youth organized sport will have to show proof of vaccine. Any person under the age of 12 is exempt. The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is hosting a pop-up vaccine clinic at 33 Princess Street in Leamington on September 22nd, 23rd, and 24th from 12:00PM-7:00PM. Health cards are not required, and no appointment is needed.  

COVID-19 IN SCHOOLS 

There are new COVID-19 cases reported throughout three different school boards.  

The Greater Essex County District School Board is reporting one new case at Kennedy Collegiate, one new case at McWilliam Public School, one new case at Parkview Public School, one new case at Roseland Public School, one new case at Dougall Public School, and one new case at Belle River District High School. The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board has dismissed a class and bus cohort from St. Peter Catholic Elementary School after confirming a positive case.

BORDER CLOSURE EXTENSION 

The Government of the United States has announced that the land border between the US and Canada will remain closed for another 30 days until October 21, 2021.
