COVID-19 Update - May 26

Published on May 26, 2020

Hello everyone,

The Greater Essex County District school Board (GECDSB) has released its plan for graduations amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Students and families will be receiving notification from their school.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has issued a class order for all owners and operators of agricultural farms in Windsor-Essex. The order will go into effect at 12:01am on May 27th and orders contract employees to work at only one workplace. It also asks owners to have accurate and updated contact information for all employees and make the information available to the health unit to support case management and contact tracing.

The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex is now 916 with 63 deaths.

The Ontario government said that more needs to be done to protect Ontario’s seniors living in retirement and Long-Term Care homes. This comes after the findings from the Canadian Armed Forces report which were shocking and heartbreaking. The key challenges surrounding long-term care homes include issues such as non-adherence or lack of appropriate policy, insufficient and inadequate resources, infection prevention, safety, staffing levels and level of care. The Ontario government promised that they are working around the clock to stabilize the hardest hit long-term care homes in the province. Ford has asked the Canadian forces to extend their mission in Ontario long-term care homes for another 30 days

The Provincial government has asked Ontario’s chief coroner officer to investigate the situation in long-term care homes in an effort to bring justice and accountability to the residents and families of long-term care homes in the province. The results of this investigation will be shared with the police and the public once they become available.

In response, our party released a statement saying that the conditions are unacceptable and we need inspections, takeovers of all homes that are not safe, and we need to launch a full, transparent public inquiry. You can read the full statement here.

The Prime Minister announced the Federal government is increasing its orders of PPE, noting that so far more than 40 plane loads of supplies have arrived in Canada as domestic companies continue to produce much-needed medical gear. He announced the federal government has signed a contract with General Motors to produce 10 million face masks, which are already in production.

The Prime Minister also announced a new contract for 10,000 ventilators to be produced through a partnership with Nobel Laureate Dr. Art McDonald and Vexos, an electronics manufacturerer based in Markham, Ont. Deliveries will begin this summer bringing the total of made-in Canada ventilators to 40,000.

Please continue practicing social distancing, wearing a mask in public, and washing your hands often.
