COVID-19 Update - August 13

Published on August 13, 2020

Good afternoon,

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has reported eight new cases of COVID-19 today. Four of those cases are in the agri-farm sector, three are considered community spread and one is still under investigation. Our region has a total of 2,410 confirmed cases, 2,231 resolved cases, and 71 deaths.

The Windsor Regional Hospital is asking for clarity over what to do when a student or teacher tests positive for COVID-19. The government’s plan to re-open schools has fallen short of meeting the recommendations of both health and education experts. Today, I released a joint statement with MPP Gretzky and MPP Natyshak, calling on the government to implement our caucus’ recommendations for smaller class sizes, more teachers, and better infection control including ventilation in schools. You can read the full statement here.

Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare announced that they are expanding visitation beginning on Monday. All individuals entering the campus will be screened for signs and symptoms of illness, including COVID-19. The full visitation plan can be found here.

The byelection for Ward 7 has been set for October 5, with advanced voting to be held from September 29 to October 3. The byelection was originally planned for April 27 but had to be postponed due to COVID-19. Voting will be held in person at the WFCU Centre with pandemic protocols in place.

Kingsville has announced that their beaches will re-open Friday August 14 now that the town is in Stage 3 of the re-opening framework. There will be additional signage posted to advise the public of the protocols and measures that should be followed. The washroom facilities near the beaches will also be re-opening.

Please continue to practice social distancing, wear a mask or face covering in public and wash your hands often.
