Outrageous Hydro bills hurting people who can least afford it: MPP Hatfield

April 5, 2017

Queen’s Park – During question period Wednesday, MPP Percy Hatfield took Premier Kathleen Wynne to task for her skyrocketing hydro bills that are leaving low-income residents in Windsor destitute.

“I have a sad and unbelievable story for you,” Hatfield started. “Larry Bruner lives in my riding of Windsor-Tecumseh. He is on Ontario Works. He gets the max – $706 a month. His rent is $406. He has to pay back $35.30 as part of an over-payment. So, that leaves him with $264.70 a month to live on. But his hydro bill has gone up to $273.40. He’s $8.70 in the hole before he even thinks about how he’s going to get anything to eat or pay any other bills.”

“Does this government still believe their flawed energy policies are going to make life easier for everyone in Ontario?”

Hatfield said the rising cost of hydro is fast outpacing any increases people may get on Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Plan. “Even with a 17 per cent cut to hydro bills coming sometime next summer – it would leave Larry $37.78 to live on for the month. That’s $1.26 a day,” Hatfield said.

“What’s it going to take to get this government to take better care of people like Larry Bruner - people who need their help the most?”
